The BBC had a unique talent for matching the individual and the sport to be iconic.

Sadly today because nearly all sports are spread so thinly over multiple channels commentators feel that they have to fill the silences with empty words - the greats matched the pace of their sports - Peter O'Sullevan could never commentate on cricket and John Arlott couldn't do Horse racing but each exemplified and magnified the occaision.

All too often now the commenator believes it is their job to spout inanities just to fill the space in the broadcast.
