Their coffee isn't 's**t' - some of it's really high quality, if you like that kind of thing. It's just mostly a very dark roast, compared to almost anyone else. That's how they like it on the West Coast of the US, and that's what Starbucks does.
So it's bitter (or at least smokey, for their lighter roasts). Less acidey. And less taste of the original bean, more just of the roasting itself.
Matter of taste, innit. Ask a Spanish or Italian person (or a Californian), and that's what they expect their coffee to taste more like.
Not my bag, but a lot of people like it. (Maybe, from the views on here, the UK is like the US - people from the East prefer a lighter roast...)
