Indeed

Post a year's subscription to the athletic I realised how little I was getting from any of it.

And I'm a huge fan of print media.

The online stuff is a mess, links to paid for articles with no or little forewarning (doesn't inspire me to subscribe)

The a recent one was this:
Chris Goreham: Why I’m struggling to keep up with Wagner’s Canaries

That's meant to be a headline to suck you into paid for content?

In other articles there's not really any further info or analysis beyond the headline.

Not just in football, but across print media, in an effort to fill pages there's huge swaths of content that is simply opinion or polemic - you can only sell that if people care what you say, and/or you have a very amusing writing style.

(cue another plug for Slow journalism and their almanac Delayed Gratification)

Id have probably stuck with the Athletic if they'd have had cricket too - but not interested in the other sports they cover and I'm not really interested in other football teams (even the England side).
