not sure that the increase in retracted articles is directly linked to flaws in the process, as opposed to greater scrutiny now with the ease an ability of getting hold of papers and the wider audience (in 1973 the circulation of the journals would have been miniscule)

It's an interesting debate.

It's also an ongoing, widely discussed debate, so not really brushing anything under the carpet.
