And that a sense of dislocation might contribute to fans' unhappiness, and their failure to continue or give unqualified support to a struggling team or manager?

Seems reasonably obvious to me - act in such a way as to enhance the bond. This is one small way in which that is being done. And presumably, that's precisely why it's being done.
