However, I’m not convinced that smith is actually a very good manager.
He did quite well at Walsall, but no promotion, did quite well at Brentford, but nothing like as well as his assistant did when he took over, and he got a villa squad rich with talent into the playoffs (grealish, Abraham, McGinn, kodija, sure there are more I’ve forgotten about). He very nearly didn’t keep them there despite spending a huge amount of money. It’s not really an amazing track record, is it?
Yes, seems a decent guy, not surprised he’s respected across the football world. But what is he going to do exactly that’s going to revive our fortunes? He doesn’t seem to be a brilliant coach from what we’ve seen (or his track record), so is the solution for us to buy better players? Not sure that’s an option we can or should be relying on.
When all is said and done, smith has to go, whether that’s for the reasons mick mentions (he’s the post farke fall guy and we are a bit limited squad wise) or because he’s not doing a good job. We’ll only really find out which it is after he’s gone, much the same as we discovered are squad was a bag of s**te after farke left.
