We were never 'after' Smith. He was still in a job at Villa when DF was sacked.

And therein lies much of the problem. When the decision was made to get rid of Farke (rightly or wrongly is a separate debate) the Club - Webber - didn't have a replacement lined up. Smith became available and had a good pedigree. The rest is history - this is how we have ended up and its so so sad.

For what it's worth (and this is only a guess) I think we wanted that Norwegian who manages Bolde/Glimt but no one had checked as to whether he would leave there mid-season!
