I can remember a player-manager saying to me that he often made bad decisions during a match as he couldn't see the bigger picture. It was only when he played the match back afterwards that he could see the match was a lot different to how it had seemed as a player on the pitch. He became a better manager once he stopped playing.
Therefore it would seem a bad idea for players to be deciding their own tactics. No wonder they don't play much like a team.
