or the championship. i know they would never ditch it (and it is exciting and makes the season more interesting for more teams) but the thing is the team that comes third last in the prem then has to do pretty much open heart surgery to adapt back to life in the champs (as do the other two relegated teams) and the team that wins the play offs isn't always the third best over the course of a season so the gearshift up to the prem is invariably ruinous. so this constant churn is just playing into the hands of the elite clubs as not many of the chasing pack get any stability.
of the last twenty play-off winners, ten were relegated back the next season and only west ham have finished in the top half of the prem (twice).
