there's a weird disconnect in that they seem to think that it's not

their responsibility at all to improve the atmosphere. They've created a situation where we've ended up with an overpaid squad playing boring football, under a boring manager. With a sporting director who has presented no vision and seems half interested at best. And all following a really spiritless relegation (for the second time).

Given that backdrop, of course the fans aren't going to be spontaneously erupting in enthusiasm when there is a lull in an already dull match, or after we concede.

They don't seem to realize that many fans are going to games (particularly away games) these days simply for the day out, to meet up with friends or whatever else. Decent attendances don't correlate with supporters being happy with how the club is run. And for them not to be aware of the general apathy and waning interest, and trying to address it constructively in some way, is piss poor management.
