Bringing in their 'own' players is restricted by two transfer windows a year and the money the club has to send. This is the same situation for Smith as any other manager. I suspect he will say that the constantly chopping and changing starting line up has been mostly dictated by injuries as much as him struggling to find his preferred formation.
