I actually think there was a plan / philosophy but that they lost faith in it after the first prem season. As I’ve argued before, that was the time to change the system but they got promoted again with Classic Farkeball (the easy option). THEN they tried to change the approach and got mullered in the prem. Smith is a much more pragmatic coach who has yet to get a tune out of this squad but which is also a squad that is disjointed and flawed.
