All this talk of nuclear war takes me back to the early 70's

when I volunteered for the ROC (Royal Observer Corps). It kept me off the streets in the evenings after I turned down my invite to Sandhurst and my dad wanted me in some sort of uniform if at all possible...discipline. The group I worked with were in the hugemassusive bunker up on the inner ring road near the N.Walsham roundabout. Had no idea there were building underground there so quite an eye opener. They had decontamination room, BT room, dormitories, kitchen, food store etc plus an Ops Room with the classic Perspex wall for writing on and telephones connected to the outlying bunkers inc County Hall. And loads and loads of maps. Exercises were based around a nuclear device exploding above ground (not hitting the ground and exploding) and then we'd follow the fall-out cloud by monitoring the wind direction etc. Fascinating stuff and a good experience but I didn't last long down there as wanted to do other things in my spare time.
