(I admit that my previous message title was deliberately provocative, and also abstracted my point, ironically)

what I should have said was - xG is another tool in match analysis which can provide a further counterpoint/contextualisation to the other raw data analysis of goals/results. I would strongly argue, however, that any of these single routes into the data of how a team is playing/how effective a team is, is severely limited in view of the multiple factors contributing to those values, all of which should be considered in the round.
