I think it could have worked, and agree with crises, but also we simply never had

Premier League quality defenders or, as we've said to death, a proper spoiler in midfield who can then switch play to attack or retain possession (e.g. Skipp).

I tend to focus most on our central defender since most Premier League teams these days play with full backs who cannot defend anyway. Hanley, Zimmermann, Gibson, Kabak and obviously the emergency ones in Byram and Sorensen - none of those are decent Premier League quality. Godfrey is but was still learning his trade when we had him and I think same will be the case for Omobamidele.

I think the last Premier League quality central defenders we have had were early Bassong and early Klose (before his injury).
