Refereeing decision that bothered / confused me yesterday

The freekick where Pritchard took the ball to the face and went down. The referee restarted play with a drop ball that Sunderland lumped in to our half and then pressed us. Had the ball not run out for our throw in fairly high up which we hadn't taken before the ref decided to go and check on the player? Not sure if I got it right but seemed to typify the level of ref'ing in the Championship so far this season.
