the CL has a wild card system

it does not specify that top 4 in the Prem (for example) are guarateed a place, but leaves it to the national FA's discretion. The assumption was that the FA would naturally realise winning the CL was a greater feat than just coming 4th in a domestic league and would give the last place to the CL winners (as the Spanish FA did a few years ago). As our FA demonstrated though, there is no accounting for the stupidity of national FAs (one anyway) so now they have had to change the rules - if it happened next year the FA would have to give the 4th English spot to the CL champions (4th placed Prem team would go into the UEFA)
