I remember reading when I was younger and travelled on business a lot

to be totally bold, so don't take the book in, just act as if you were out to dinner with friends. And it used to work, but I don't see it the same now - probably because in London I do feel really old when I'm out! And hotel restaurants are dismal in most cases.
As I've said, some of the easy chains like a Wagamama, Honest Burger etc are ok as you're in and out quickly but the food is hardly worth the effort.
It's why I quite like apart hotels where you at least have a plate to put a sandwich on - but my preferred ones tripled in price over the summer so they're now off menu too!
