I'm convinced that the reason you avoid it

is that you can come into contact but with someone who's not a great transmitter. Then you meet that person - and wham. I finally succumbed after a lunch, and was pretty certain I knew the source, and turns out just about everyone who sat near them/spoke to them got it, and most had never had it before.
So watch out for that Temple Transmitter Type.
