By the 70s Melly was working with a small combo, the Feetwarmers

It was the rag week concert and the only one I ever saw the vice-chancellor and his wife attend, the only people with chairs, apart from Melly himself who would sit down while the combo were embellishing the songs with instrumental sections.

I think he may have fronted a band earlier in his career.
