I think he was signed as a quality player who was achievable due to his injury record

He was theoretically experienced and was there to play.

There was no expectation that Jamal and Max would both flourish at the next level. Byram actually supplanted Lewis out of position at left back due to his quality.

He wasn't signed to be backup.
