That's the op's point I think

We are creating chances, we're being thwarted by a combination of great saves and bad luck.
Then the inevitable individual error happens and heads drop.
On a different day we're already 2 up and Max's clearance goes into the crowd.

You do make your own luck by getting into positions where luck can play a part. Sadly in those same positions bad luck can also play a part.
