If your contract is coming up the contract usually states a period of notice if it is not to be renewed. This is not law, but accepted practice.
Foley becomes disruptive, makes some stupid comments to the press, and they decide to let him go but cannot afford to fire him plus compensation of the rest of the contract AND hire a new coach.
Therefore, he is informed with one month's notice that his contract will not be renewed, paid off for that month and everyone's happy.
What IS interesting is the theory of 12 month rolling contract everyone was bandying about. If that were true then they would have actually given him his notice at the end of last season, mean he had nothing to lose in making statements to the press about the fans as he did.
