...if you're right you can crow about it for ever and hold the position of board guru, whereas even if you are full of s**t you can behave with total authority until 1) you're proven wrong or 2) you're lucky enough to guess right.

If the worst happens (version 1) simply make up some story that the deal fell through at the last minute or come up with a fake medium-style excuse (e.g. "My source said Scottish but obviously meant not English.").
