might simply be down to the fact that Germany has (had) a fairly considerably

older population than the UK. As do Italy and Spain, which are also higher.

France is the real outlier in it all and must be worth looking at. It has a fairly old population, it took similar measures to its neighbours, it got hid by Covid as much, and yet it seemingly had a much lower excess death rate.
