I know I am probably giving far too much credit to the grown ups on our side, and in practice it's just 'serendipity', but I don't think you could really have planned this any better if NATO was wanting to stitch Russia up.

Crimea? Fine, take it. We're going to have to put a few sanctions on you but they won't hurt much.
'Volunteers' in Eastern Ukraine? Poor form Vlad, but fine, we're not going to do anything. Just don't go too far m'kay?
Building up for an invasion? OK, we'll just watch.
Making noises about an invasion? Well they're not NATO are they? so we won't get involved.
Preparing for an invasion? OK, we're pulling our troops out so you won't risk triggering Art 5. We won't put any troops into Ukraine. Not our fight.

Oh, you've actually invaded? MWHAHAHAHAHAHA. CAN'T BELIEVE YOU FELL FOR IT!! NATO, UNLEASH HELL!
