It's a lot of loot for a Champs player, but

if we jibbed him off and kept the money (i.e. approx 3m), who could we replace him with for that budget (fee + wages) who would be likely to do better.

It's a no brainer really.

And as you say, if anyone deserves a bit of a pay day in the last year of his contract, it's him.
