For all we know we could have been moving heaven and earth to get those positions filled and been let down at the last minute or turned down by everyone we could possibly have gotten in that would have made a difference.
It's only a glaring omission if we didn't try hard enough. But I think it's interesting that, for so many of us, our default assumption is that we haven't (for several seasons).
I suppose it's hard to openly come out and say 'yeah, we know our current midfield/set up isn't good enough for this league but we did X, Y Z to address it', as it's hardly going to motivate said current midfield, but the gaps have been pretty glaring and there's a big whiff of the suggestion that our regime thinks (thought) what we have is actually good enough.
