most of the time

there will be some that are great man-managers and can mould a particular group of players into something greater than the sum of their parts (but not all groups of players - you need a group that's receptive to their style)

there will be others that are great tacticians and can outwit an opponent / see things differently (as long as they have good enough players to do it with).

Some will be outright awful and out of their depth.

And then there's the vast majority that can do a decent job but are ultimately just riding a wave of luck and the group of players that happen to be at the club at the time.

Smith, I suspect, is in the latter camp.
