I think I've read or seen when Ricky gervais done the awards ( which were far more controversial) that he had to give his material to the producers etc for screening. So if that's correct then this joke ( which it was) was deemed light hearted and got through the screening process.

The lack of security of an actor walking up off script unplanned and then just casually sitting back down again makes me question that maybe just maybe they knew what was happening.

It's a great talking point tho and probably what the Oscar's wanted. Because if it wasn't for this incident nobody would care today.
