Whilst not disagreeing with your sentiments you're wrong on one fairly major point...

Norfolk is not and never has been a "reletively affluent place", well not unless you're comparing it to Africa. Actually it's always been seen as having a low wage low skill economy, mainly due to the agricultural base of much of the employment. The average wage in Norfolk is well below average and is also by far the lowest in East Anglia. Now Wimbledon on the other hand...!!!!
