Despite my own deep held reservations I am resigned to the fact that Worthington will be managing the team at the beginning of next season. Clearly Nigel is not going to resign and why should he. The fans point to the lack of performance and his less than well thought through post match comments but whom of those who complain would themselves give up such a well paid job. Nigel, like any of us if we have found ourselves in a similar position, obviously believes that he can turn the situation around.
No, it is the role and duty of the Board to provide such objectivity. Loyalty is a worthwhile attribute but when it borders on blind faith then the line has been crossed. What I require as a supporter of Norwich City for over 40 years is a statement from the Board as to their expectations for next season in terms of league position. In business, which undoubtedly football club stewardship has become in the 21st century, organizations and the manager?s who work within them are judged upon SMART objectives (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Reasonable, and Timed). I see no reason why Nigel should not be held next season to the same criteria.
In life uncertainty is a state that nobody: players, supporters, club sponsors feel comfortable within. The Board must clearly establish and communicate their criteria of success and failure. This will allow supporters to clearly understand whether the aspirations of the Board match their own. If disparity exists then at least it will allow fans such as myself to make what would be a life changing decision as to their commitment to the football club that they, their fathers, and their grandfathers have supported.
