For what its worth here are my thoughts on why the board support the manager. Whilst not being happy with this or necessarily agreeing, I can understand it.
Whether you be WO or KTF, I don't think there would be many who would argue that the Manager has performed well this season (except maybe Sussex who I suspect could start an argument with a mirror). The arguments for and against sacking the manager have been well aired on this site so I'm not even going to go there. Basically Nigel has made some shocking decisions over the last 2 seasons.
If we can all see it, why cant the board ? Well maybe they do.
In my opinion, Nigel Worthington is, at best, a very average manager, always has been, always will be. He has in his own mind, a very clearly defined set of footballing values around which he builds his team. We all know what they are: teamwork, commitment, honesty, endeavor. In some ways these are very good, decent attributes to have, they are very stable attributes, very dependable attributes. These are attributes that guarantee that you will always be OK, seldom magnificent, seldom appalling, but always OK.
Under Nigel Worthington Norwich City will always be the 30th (ish) ranked team in English football. By which I mean, given average conditions, we are fairly likely to end up around about the borderline for play off qualification in England's second tier. Whether we improve on that position or do worse is dependent on injuries, peaks in form, the rub of the green, other teams results etc.
So in a good year, with a couple of decent runs, fairly free from injury, some consistency in the side, players on form, other results going our way and a good slice of luck we can hit the play offs or even get promoted. In a bad year, a bit of back luck, some confidence problems, a few injuries, a dip in form and other teams getting good results we could finish as low as mid table.
And THAT is the appeal of Nigel to the Board. Under Nigel Worthington - chances or promotion = not that good; chances of relegation = negligable.
The board are taking this club through a consolidation period. They are focused on repairing the damage done 10 years ago. They are not looking for premiership glory - just yet. At this point in time their objective is commercial stability not footballing greatness, and Nigel Worthington fits perfectly into that vision. To the board OK is good, OK is low risk. They can plan around OK and build for the future on OK. It just doesn't make for good football.
Who knows, in 2 or 3 years we may be in a better commercial position and maybe be able to take some risks, and perhaps strive for something better than OK, until that time I fully expect the Worthington stewardship to continue.
My own view is that we could still achieve the desired stability with someone more skilled in his craft. Imagine what we could do with hard work AND some better signings. But then it's not me making 6 figure interest free loans to the club is it.
In the meantime I just want to forget this season. The damage that has been caused between fans, club, board, press etc may not go away. Personally I have run out of the energy required to be permanently angry at the state of affairs.
erm, and as I'm in the WO camp and I am therefore a mindless moron I'd better just say FUCK.
