Those things are equally true of imprisoning him, of course. She stays dead, her family remain traumatised.

What good would killing him do?

It would save the cost of keeping him alive for 40 years, spend the money on sick children instead. And it might have a deterrent effect. So those would be utilitarian arguments.

It would symbolise a societal revulsion at his actions and so would have totemic power. A sort of Kantian revenge argument.
