You can be excited FOR their learning (as you are excited on their behalf) - so if that's what the teacher said, it's acceptable.
But if the teacher had said he/she was excited for all the learning they were going to head that year, it's not acceptable. It would be more accurate to say they were excited ABOUT or BY all the learning...
