Always remember my boys saying to my ex

"why has dad got tears in his eyes" as I was watching the events unfold live on the TV. Didn't know on 11th that a few days later I would be on the first United Airlines flight from the UK to Newark when inbound flights were recommenced. One of only about 10 to 20 passengers. Will remember to my dying day standing in the airport before going through security at the windows overlooking New York with my arm round one of the female security guards both in tears staring out with smoke still rising from ground zero. We actually flew round the site so could look down. remember thinking it's very red and glowing but then saw on the TV that they had lined the adjacent buildings with red mesh to avoid falling debris for the rescue workers. Was on my way to San Juan but took a few days to concentrate on work.
