It's a bit like England football teams of the past though

only a few days ago, people were going on about how much better this batting line-up looked, how much more secure it was. Then we get skittled out (by perhaps the best seam bowler India have ever had), and once again we're apparently picked the wrong players.

I think the problems are much deeper and more structural. We don't have enough players to pick from, the ones we do have don't play nearly enough long-form cricket. So we just don't have enough test-quality players (and particularly, for English conditions, batsmen) to pick from. There's no easy answer, and it certainly isnt around just being better at picking the team.
