Haven't used 3 in the UK but they are one of the 'big' phone contract suppliers. Coverage will be much the same as the others.
The biggest issue is making sure your phones are unlocked for any network - if it's like the UK- it's possible your phones are restricted to the network that sold you the phone - and in which case, will need unlocking.
If that's all OK, any Sim should be fine and if you didn't want to buy the 3 card in the US, you can get sim only no contract deals over here very easily - even supermarkets sell them.
