There’s an excellent account of this in Leaving Alexandria by Richard Holloway (who used to be the Bishop of Edinburgh). He himself is full of uncertainties and he recognises that that makes him a good pastor but a terrible evangelist. He gets quite annoyed with the evangelists, who are full of brassy certainty and conviction (which gets people in through the door, but doesn’t help them in hard patches of life) and don’t entertain any other ideas.
Holloway’s “Waiting for the last bus” is a must read for anyone with elderly parents, by the way
