Clearly, the starting point will be that the positions are Dimi and Max's to lose.

Putting it a different way, it would be daft to sign someone that is merely back up and not able to compete for a place in the team. I think he'll add good competition for places and if for whatever reason it turns out he's a better option then that's not a bad thing if it improves our team.
