From where I'm sat any confidence

looks like overconfidence. Heh.

I'm perfectly happy to accept my view as an odd outlier. (and have no interest in playing the pessimist simply to play an 'i told you so' card at some point in the future (hopefully not!!!))

I guess that I've seen these tournaments come and go over the years and had many occasions where I've thought "This is a great opportunity!" only to watch us flub our lines or get whacked by the first decent side we come up against.

I thought last night's result was brilliant, and a real step change... but... but... from the bits of the Euros I've watched, I still can't see this side as being among the best, and the nagging voice in my head points out that Germany were within a whisker of failing to get through even the group stages.

Buuuuut, a few of those 'good' sides like France have been dumped out, so yeah, in tournament footy there's always a chance.

I'm not a gambler, so not sure how the odds work - but as a scientist, is it that, because we have a technically easier route to the final we've got the 'favourite' odds, but that might flip depending upon who we'd meet in the final if we get there?

As I say, really, genuinely, not trying to be awkward, but I can't get my brain around the idea that we're favourites... and in most other aspects of life I'm pretty optimistic... which I guess makes me doubly suspicious of this.

Hopefully you're right!
