Maybe it's just how you've explained it, but I can't relate your point and this article

Ferdinand is saying it's lost it's meaning and action is required rather than token gestures. I doubt anyone would disagree with that.

You seem to be saying that booing the gesture is justifiable on the grounds that it is some kind of political lecture being rammed down your throat.

Sure, if players don't want to do it anymore because they feel it has lost impact, they shouldn't be criticised. However, hard to see justification for booing those that do want to do it.
