If that's true then we can't have begged him to stay a year on the promise of being sold next year.
How I imagine it worked is Webber says "you are worth £30m pounds and we won't sell you for less", around Christmas Webber probably said, "you're even better, well done, you're now worth £40m pounds and we won't sell you for less".
The agreement would never have been "we'll sell you no matter what" its simply "you are worth X and will only be sold to someone who offers X".
No bids, no sale.
