Yeah, that's all I could think of. But odd that no other VC platform sees it as a barrier

And surely in the end it's User Beware - you'd only make it an option. And indeed you could hardwire the default to be Self-View on so that you actually have to switch it off in every meeting (that's what the previous platform at my work did - but we've now moved to Teams....).

Anyway, just had a meeting and used a Post-It and it was better. Only problem is you can't move the meeting view around on your screens, obviously, but heyho.
