The problem with 111

is that clicks on the line sound like a dialled 1. So you could just get the wind blowing the wires and it would do silent calls which plod might feel constrained to investigate. A lot of countries therefore went with 112. We went Full Error Prevention instead.

Anyone else remember dialling a number by jiggling the thing that held the receiver up and down to make the clicks?

Also I remember dialling 92 either for Norwich or Yarmouth numbers before the full STD code came in (I was in Acle). But I can't remember which (might have been Norwich as Acle ended up in the Yarco 01493 area, but it might not, I'm very old and can't remember)
