That sounds like the type of thing I hear all the time...

for example a boy was sent out of class today as he left he moaned about being sent out 'just for picking something up'. No, he wasn't sent out for picking something up he was sent out for throwing whatever it was in the first place, swearing, leaving his seat when he was told not to and thereby disrupting the class.
