Do refs need more protection?

We often see players from any team get close to the ref to argue or demand cards be shown.

I think refs can use current powers to book/ send off players but doesn’t seem to happen so I wonder if a new rule is needed

“ no player shall get within 3 metres of the ref without good reason”

The good reason can be for example:
Lining up for free kick as ref marks the line
Running past ref to get to the ball or run with it or similar
Being called by the ref to be spoken to or being booked

Not good reason:
Going up to ref to argue about a decision.

I do think if ref wants to speak to a player they should go to nearest penalty spot or centre circle and all other players must remain outside penalty area or centre circle, if not they get a booking after 3 seconds.

vAR could be used in premier games.
