Must be so, so tough

Writing your masterpiece very early on and never reaching those heights again, and knowing it. Some authors having Struck Big kind of stick with that world (and usually f**k it up for themselves/fans - very very rarely improving or adding to the original really, though some of the fantasy worldbuilders do pull it off), Heller definitely tried not to but Closing Time kind of felt like an act of desperation, returning to those characters in the hope he could write something as brilliant again. Sadly he couldn't.
