The other point to make is that who you use (ie how much you should pay) depends on what you are buying.

Bog standard modern house that changes hands often? Go cheap and cheerful. A trained monkey could do it. All you need is their pii cover.

New builds, old houses that havent been sold in 30 years, leasehold flats and all of that sort of thing - pay for a proper solicitor that knows what pitfalls to look out for. You dont want to discover that the paralegal missed a flying freehold that stops you extending, etc.
