to love visiting Nana, she had a haberdashery shop on Station Rd, North Harrow. Her parents bought their house off-plan before the war, all very Betjeman and the new Metroland. My Dad moved to Northwood Hills having been bombed out of Balham, mum and dad met whilst carol singing on Rayners Lane.
It all seemed so genteel when we visited Nana in the 70s.
All privet hedges removed now and front gardens full of cars. No pebble-dashed birdbath to be seen anywhere. No tea trolly in the lounge, no bottle of Kia-ora in the larder for us.
